For many years, the Illinois area was inhabited by Miami, Potawatomi, and other Native American tribes. French explorers first came to the area in the 17 th century, and the United States controlled the area after the early part of the 19 th century. The name "Chicago" comes from the French version of a native word meaning "wild onion." Illinois became a state in 1818, and Chicago became incorporated as a city in 1837. The city quickly established itself as an important commercial waypoint between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.

Railroads helped connect Chicago with the Eastern United States, and people from all over the world immigrated to the city. A large section of Chicago was burned to the ground in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, but from the ashes rose the world's first skyscraper, completed in 1885. During Prohibition, Chicago was famously the site of numerous clashes between police and alcohol smugglers. Chicago hosted the World's Fair in 1933 and 1934, and cemented its position as one of the world's greatest cities during the 20 th century.

Today, Chicago is home to more than 2.7 million people, making it the third most populous city in the U.S. About 9.5 million people live in the Chicago metropolitan area. Chicago is still a major transport hub for the American Midwest, and sees a lot of air traffic from all over the world. In fact, O'Hare International Airport is considered the second busiest airport on the planet.
